No Incendiarism Tbe mystery Solved The wire and cotton mystery alluded-to in our last in connection with : a supposed attempted incendiarism, iias, we are glad to say, been solved, aad it now turns out that no such diabolical crime as arson was at tempted on the night in question. ' In jus tice to the good name of our people, white and colored, we are rejoiced that this is so. It seems that Mr. J. D. Nut V who has & drug 8 tore on the corner of Front and Mul berry streets, had a wire stretched across the street Thursday night. This wire was wrapped with cotton saturated with oil; and it was intended that when the Demo cratic Drocession nassed in that neighbor- hood to set fire to the cotton. In the mean time, however, a baggage wagon passed by, and the wire, not being sufficiently ele vated, came in contact with the driver and was loosened from its fastenings and be came entangled with one of the wheels. Thus it was carried by the wagon to the in tersection of Nutt and Walnut streets, where it was detached; a boy who was rid ing with the driver j umping down and- put ting his foot upon it The boy then re mounted and the wagon, drove on. The parties connected with the ' mystery were before Mayor Hall Friday night, when an informal investigation took place, and the above facts were elicited. Kindness Appreciated As stated inr a former issue, the Democ- racy of New Hanover is indebted to Mr. . V. Richards for designing and painting the most of the transparencies used in Thurs day night's celebration. That his courtesy and kindness has been appreciated is at tested by the following: Mr. E. V. Richardt : ' ' Dear Sir: Allow me. on behalf of the. Democratic Executive Committee of. New Hanover Co, N. C, U.S., to present you with a hat; not for its intrinsic value, but as a memento for your kindness and good. waflHIIffW III NV HlliH LI in LTCIlUJLa BtlilLi UIL1I1, it m.
